Now that the challenge is over it has given me a couple of days to reflect on what we have achieved.
Both of us went into this challenge to set an example to our children. We both feel we have done this. All our children have wanted to go out on their bikes to be like daddy. They have understood the relevance of the challenge and why we are raising money for charity. This has shown them that being selfless can help many people less fortunate. They have learnt about maps and have being using technology to follow our progress.
The challenge was just that… “a challenge” from start to finish. The first day was hot but with strong headwinds. For the remaining 13 days the weather was against us with strong headwinds and monsoon rains. The weather constituted the hardest and most challenging aspect of the whole experience. The worst day was stage 3 in Perthshire in Scotland where it was very difficult to see due to the rain and very cold. We both struggled all day and wondered at times if it was possible to carry on without putting ourselves in danger.
Overall the cycling aspect of the event was hard but got easier over the 2 weeks. After all the training and the actual event, we both felt that this was the easiest and most enjoyable part especially when we hit the 90 mile mark each day. On a personal level, I really enjoyed spending quality time with Graeme. It gave us a chance to really bond together and get to know each other on a greater level.
